OK. I gotta be very careful how I word this review. I really don't want to give the impression this wasn't a very good nights dance. Because it was. Very, very good buzz, high standard, friendly etc etc etc. All the usual trimmings, tea, coffee, cakes, sweets etc. The hall rocks, and great, fast floor.
But, I do have to say I walked out disappointed.
In the six months this event has been running the music has gone from sublime to pretty much ordinary. (I'm talking the before midnight music here). Tracks like "H.A.P.P.Y.", Black eyed peas "I gotta feeling" and many, many others all too familiar... Like any night, some was good, some was bad, depending on your individual taste, but the music overall has got decidely more mainstream and more uptempo. It's not that there is anything wrong with those types of tracks even, just that I can wander round the corner to a DYD or Mojive freestyle at Totton and hear exactly those tracks. Hence 'ordinary'.
Midnight to 2am music ? Sublime. Doesn't get any better.
So I'm in a bit of a quandary, I've been around a while, and I know a good freestyle when I see one, and this pretty obviously was a good freestyle. For what it's worth, not even close to being knocked of my list of events to attend. I was just expecting a bit more given what I experienced previously... or maybe just a bit less of the 'ordinary'. _________________ My local WCS dance guide: http://www.southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726 |

LOL... no, you don't have to be careful at all in what you say.
Playing familiar music is always a difficult decision for any DJ because good tracks that many other Dj's also play do fill the floor. And so it was at Twisted last night. I spend my time between dancing and DJing and also have Vince DJing too so it's very easy to see what people want to dance to. And as I know we've all talked about, you can only really gauge how well you're doing as a DJ by reading the floor. It just seemed that the familiar stuff was what got most people up and so I think we had to ride with that.
That said I can tell you that no more than 30% of the pre-twist music was what I would call really familiar and maybe only another 40% was known, but less familiar stuff. I think the other thing is that, unusually IMO, there has been a lot of good modern pop produced over the last year and even though those tracks do get played everywhere I still love to hear them and so it appears do other dancers.
I know you're post wasn't a criticism Steve and we always welcome feedback, so thanks for that. I'm glad you had a good time overall and appreciate you supporting the venue and the event.
It was another sell out last night and I hope our restriction on numbers and shipping in extra fans helped to make it a great night for the majority of dancers. The next Twisted, the Pre-LUX party on the 14th August where many of the LUX DJ's and Teachers will be in attendance, should be a corker and I can't wait.

Well having not been 'around' for as long as Steve!! .......... he has said it all really.
This was my 2nd Twisted and I had a truly amazing nights dancing and am def booking for next one! But the music before midnight did not inspire as much as at the last Twisted event..... I was recognising too many tracks which was suprising me as I hardly recognised any at the last one.
After midnight was brilliant and no complaints at all, I had some fab dances and a night like last night just makes me want to dance dance dance!!
I love the venue its so friendly and you can see who is about and its not overcrowded.
Why cant they run this sort of booking at the Hub I wonder?! |

Sorry Dr, just read Steves input there and clicked reply without seeing yours!
Your restriction on numbers is a great idea and works hence having room to dance unlike the Hub!
The fans were welcome too
Don't stop what you're doing, wouldn't wanna lose twisted now!
Sounds like the 14th is one to aim for ! |
