I am increasingly dis-liking the name "First Move" as a sensible name for any move. New dancers get confussed very easily when the 1st move is, say, the 2nd or 3rd move in a routine and you then say we're going to do the "1st move". Does that mean the 1st or 2nd or 3rd move in the routine...?!
So my question:
Is it time to find a new name for "the First Move"?
If so, what would you suggest? Bear in mind just how many variations there are - EG, 1st Move rock steps, 1st Move Mamba, 1st Move Roundabout, 1st Move Archie Spin... And the list goes on and on..!
Or, is it so ingrained in existing dancers/organizations that we are stuck with it?!

TeeDee...good point. Thinking about it, it is really just a sway type move but leading with the left hand instead of the right. So my suggestion for a name would be a "left-handed Sway".

The name is silly. But it can't be changed because it's the Genesis move. All moves come from this move.
I don't mess with the first move although I change other moves to make the easier, flashier, etc. Why? Because it's the Adam of all moves.
The reason I'm told it's called the "First Move" is because it was the first move in a routine danced around London nightclubs by the LeRoc Dance Troupe in the 1980s. When they did it "from the top" they did it from "the first move" and that's why it has that name. Change the move slightly and give it a different name - you probably have to do that as you can't have more than one Adam in Genesis. |
