This is going partly off Jive Q & A problems. But is very interesting and hopefully someone will know some answers!
I received during the week an e-mail from one of the Cruise Lines I Teach and DJ for, saying all recorded music has been immediately stopped. Only live music played on the Ships can be recorded and replayed for lessons etc. It being illegal to play cd's or use laptops or use passengers music in any of the lounges.
Dancing passengers on Cruise Ships often rely very heavily on 'Strict Tempo' music being played by the Dance Instructor/DJ as often the usual Philippino Orchester music is up and down and a bit pathetic!
I have of course replied I have a PPL (Public Performance Licence) and don't you have a, PRS (Performing Rights Society) for Music, licence for each of your Ships?
Reply: The Ships are mainly on the, 'High Seas' and not in 'Territorial Waters' most of the time, and it's a very grey area.
I mainly go on the 'World Wide' cruises, does that mean I have to have a PPL licence valid World Wide? and also does the Ship need a similar PRS? and is there such a Licence?
Tens of thousands of pounds for lawyers here then! _________________ Freelance Teacher & DJ.

It depends on where the Ships Home port is i.e if the ship's home port is Southampton then they would have to have a PRS license for the UK but not sure about Europe/Asia/USA
But because being a cruise ship they are mostly in International Waters which is not governed by an authority so its a grey area on what they should do.
As you have a PPL you are covered for your own music you play. The cruise line sub contracts you for the work you do (which is Djin)
Hope this helps |

I'd presume that it depends on the flag the ship is operating under as well. British flagged and registered ships will be subject to British law, Bahamian flagged and registered ships will be subject to Bahamian law, Panamanian flagged and etc etc etc
So you could have a British DJ on a Southampton based American owned Bahamian flagged ship playing music subject to the legal systems of at least three countries, and thats before the musical copyright kicks in and the ship reaches international waters! Grey area indeed. _________________ Words are good, but hens lay eggs. |

Thankyou Jiveonaut, I work for four different Cruise Lines, two very small and two very large. It's exactly as you say, British DJ, Southampton, Portsmouth or Dover based Cruise Ships, Foreign owned Cruise Line, flying Bermuda, Bahamian and other flags!
It could be said I should approach the PRS for MUSIC and PPL and asked thier advice and requirements, but that could cause a lot of repercussions for myself.
Something for the Cruise Lines to sort out for themselves I'm thinking! _________________ Freelance Teacher & DJ.

It would seem they might not have, or more likely, they did have, but the bean counters have embarked on a cost cutting exercise and have decided not to renew it |
