Since we're discussing slots, technique and stuff...

How do you start your MJ dance. Having had it engrained long ago, I still use the semi-circle and step back, and nobody has really come up with an alternative that I think works better, and is suitable to teach to complete beginners off the street.

So how do you start your MJ ?

Um...dare I say I start differently depending on my mood and partner. Some I walk onto the floor with and go straight into a turn. Other times and with other partners I use the standard "ready, steady, arm jive", I'm sad to say (sorry Mikey) and still yet other times and other partners I adapt to the mood and the capability of the partner if it is known using whatever move comes to mind.

Laughing He He Very good SJ.

Like SJ, I tend to be a bit random. Thinking about it, mostly start double handed and do a sort of traveling in/out. Other times it's a simple single traveling return. Other times it's a "standard" move of some beginner type. And other times.... Can't say I've really thought about it much before in terms of mood or what music or what partner - I just, well, start!!!

The closed blues position is one I rarely start with, even when I'm in the blues room - only if I know my partner and know she's ok with it. If I don't know her I'll start more open and "test the water" so to speak - if she is ok then I can experiment more, if she seems a little uncomfortable then I'll remain giving her space. But that's after the start so I guess isn't relevant...

For me its all about the music. If the track is slow then I tend to start in a close hold. If the track is fast then it varies depending on where in the beat it is. If its a playful tune then I tend to start dancing before I get onto the floor. So for me its all about the tunes.

I don't think I've had a 'set way' of starting for a long time. It's just whatever seems most appropriate, and that depends on the music and my partner.

As someone who also dances Lindyhop and Salsa I like to listen to the music for a few bars before I begin. Partly to get the feel of the track if I haven't heard it before and partly because i like to start on beat one if the music is structured for that.

Now, here's my gripe. As a leader, I find some followers get confused if I don't start immediately. Typically they'll start leading an armjive to try and get things started.

Are they impatient or what? GRRRRRRR!!
