An hour and a half's drive from Soton this one, not for the faint hearted.
Didn't do the workshop with Paul Warden and Catriana Wiles myself, but happy to see a pair of regulars at Bramshaw had made the journey. They said it was very intense (it was marketed as a 'bootcamp'), but excellent.
We arrived at about 16:45 for a Tea Dance advertised on the web as starting as 16:30, only to be told the start time had changed to 17:00... but we had to wait whilst the hall was setup. Eventually the queue was let in at about 17:15. So not off to a great start, but I'm glad to say it quickly got better...
As well as my fellow traveller and I, and our two friends from the Bramshaw classes, there were also a dozen or so of the London crew who attended the recent Bramshaw freestyle. Held in the Ralli Hall (bad parking), it's prolly best described as 'churchy'. It was an extremely social event, the better dancers went out of their way to ask strangers and beginners, the tea and cream jam scones went down a treat, and the music was spot on. One of the better Tea Dances I have attended of any dance style.
What I didn't know until I got there was that this event was associated with Ceroc Fever, hence the free entry into the Funky Fish Ceroc night straight after the tea dance.
Actually, it's the hotel next to the Funky Fish (very bad parking), a hall that with little effort would have been perfect for Blues. Very atmospheric.

Whether you are a Ceroc fan or not, I can tell you when they originally left this area in 98, not just customer choice was lost. Just one aspect of that was highlighted by the intermediate class held here. It reminded me of exactly how severely 'dumbed down' virtually all of the intermediate lessons in this area have become over the last decade or so. The moves, technique taught, tips and hints were just another level higher. And everybody got it, because whilst a harder lesson per se, the better teaching more than compensated for that. Just as much fun, but it was a 'real' intermediate lesson of a kind that we just don't get in this area any more.

It's a long way to go, and I would not have travelled for just one of the events on offer, but making a day of it was certainly worth it. Very enjoyable 'bootcamp', I'll be back. _________________ My local WCS dance guide: http://www.southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726 |

Hi Steve, I am glad that the trip to Brighton & Hove was worth it and that you enjoyed the day and evening.

Actually, it's the hotel next to the Funky Fish | Actually Steve, our Ceroc venue is in the Funky Fish Club - We just use the hotel entrance to the club. Parking in Brighton and Hove is also a nightmare and is a totally car unfriendly place. It doesn't matter where you go, the parking is atrocious and all the central car parks charge extortionate amounts even at night.
We will be doing these events as often as possible in conjuction with Warren's various Bootcamp (Tango & WCS) and teadances - who says Ceroc franchisees do not work with and promote other dance organisations!!

Would it be at all possible to have some kind of diary on this part of the forum so that we are aware of them well in advance?.....Living at best an hours drive away from anywhere that teaches WCS and Blues, I find it easier to travel to do workshops etc during the weekend. I'm sure that I cant be the only person that would be keen to attend such events |

Hi Nicky - This was detailed on our email updates - do you receive these?
Ceroc Fever work with Warren Richardson who is the organiser of 'Bootcamps' (Tango, WCS & Blues) and also Decadance which run predominantly in Brighton & Hove. Decadance events are monthly freestyles with an eclectic mix of music for Tango, blues, WCS, MJ, latin. Before each freestyle there is a 1 1/2 hour hosted WCS practice session. Full details are on Warrens website www.decadancenights.co.uk which has links to the various bootcamps as well. Perhaps Steve, you could have a look at these and advise as necessary. I have attended several Tango & WCS bootcamps and they only use top teachers who work you hard! Many of our Brighton Ceroc members also attend these sessions and they all find that this compliments their Modern Jive and gives them an extra dimension to their freestyle. As I said in a previous post, this is also a good example of a Jive organiser working with another dance organiser to provide events that benefit the whole dance community. |

That's good, makes me sound so much 'cooler' when I say I was dancing at the Funky Fish at the weekend

I have never been to any of the 'just freestyle' events, so can't comment, but I can confirm that all the various WCS teachers that have taught these bootcamps are top notch. Unfort, there doesn't appear to be a 'next one' scheduled yet. This is the diary.

I will try and publicize any events I hear about that aren't too far away, and of course, anyone else is free to publicize there WCS events. I want to know!
Incidentally, Cat and Paul have a regular Windsor workshop, Windsor also being about an hour and a half away I guess. Next one is this upcoming Sunday (19/07) I believe: http://www.westcoastswing.co.uk/ _________________ My local WCS dance guide: http://www.southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726 |
