This is only my personal opinion of course.
The idea was to make this Revolution night slightly different. Different class, different music. etc. It was a fantastic idea that would probably appeal to a subset of dancers probably best described as more in the intermediate+ range. God knows there are enough of those dancers in the Mojive area.
Unfortunately, it was completely botched.
I remember the very first Revolution. Excellent. Free. Great playlist, not super-slow or anything, but just somewhat different. The second one. Also excellent, not free, but reduced, similar playlist, and the dancers beginning to resemble the intermediate+ range this night should automatically appeal to.
The third night. Complete disaster. Martin, great lad who I like, played a set of music that could have been lifted from any normal Mojive lesson night. For us coming for the 'different' music, it could only be described as awful. The fourth night was marginally better, but still way too similar. Result? The intermediates+'s (who are prolly fussier than beginners anyway ) who had been promised 'different' music left mightily cheesed off at being shortchanged by Mojive music yet again and many never returned.
Revolution never really recovered from that IMO. From that moment on it was always a fight to get numbers. Some people complained, the next week the music changed back to the more 'different' music, people who had liked the bog-standard music the week before then complained. Each week losing a few dancers as the music was messed around. And so it went on. Mojive lost their nerve, the music became a mess, and the night bombed. Even at an extended £3 a night run the numbers have been bad.
Given that, not surprizingly, Revolution has come to an end. It's now a Jukebox Request night, without a class. This mondays is free, so I'll give it a go, but I am expecting the 'requests' to be unsurprizingly restricted to the usual Mojive Classics. Yuck! but we'll see...
I am very sad this has happened. I get that the Mojive dancers wanting different music are in the minority, but if people wanted bog-standard lesson music, they had Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and every Mojive freestyle to get it. Monday was supposed to be something different, a great idea to appeal to a different type of dancer the normal nights didn't appeal to. Just a shame this choice has been lost. |

Welcome to the forum, Steve. Glad to hear your opinions. I tend to agree with much of your comments, Steve. I went to a couple of the Revolutions and the first couple I went to were very good with excellent classes from Miranda and Dan. As you said, even the freestyle music was better than the Mojive norm. However, the last time I went, the music selection was awful and I was very disappointed. I have mentioned my opinions about it in another thread. Mmm Steve, its certainly hard to please people. I remember people moaning about the TA etc and when Phil actually set up a new purpose built venue, they then moaned about that. Then it was the ' wouldnt it be brilliant to have a freestyle midweek' suggestion, and he did that but people still moaned.
I been to a few Revolutions, last Mondays was terrible, hardly anyone there and at £3 its obviously not the entry fee keeping them away! There was a tango class which was basic but could be incorporated into jive and the music was varied. We didnt stay long, left at 9.30!!
Is it the music changes as you suggest or is it maybe the fact that its a Monday and too close to the weekend, would it be better being a Wednesday? God only knows, it must be a night mare sometimes for the organisers!
But they promised a 'Revolution' so if they then turn the music back to 'mojive' music, which is distinctive, no doubt there, then there isnt much of a Revolution going on, is there!
Im going to go along tomorrow night, because its free. I wouldnt pay to go after last Monday!
Eh, I didnt know that it was just a juke box night now, that starts tomorrow night then does it with no class?
See you there, whoever you are! |

Hmmm by all accounts Mondays at Hamworthy Club are good so it would look like there's something not right at Revolutions rather than it being the day.
To be honest though there seems to me to be quite a few nights that are given a special name and when you go along it's just like any other night. I've not been to Revolutions or the The Hub though but then they don't appeal to me as the music and style that's promoted for these are not my boat (not that I've got much style LOL)
Still it's good to have venues and nights where people can go to that appeals more to their particular taste and I hope this continues. It would appear Revolutions was more of a damp flannel but top marks for at least trying. |

That could have been written by me.
I was never quite sure - and I'm still not - whether people stopped going on Mondays because the music wasn't different enough, or because it was too different. Coming on this forum has been an eye-opener to me because the views expressed here about music differ largely from those expressed by the people I talk to on a weekly basis.
I would have been prepared to give it longer but there were so few people going on a Monday that it became a better option to go on Thursday, because the music wasn't that different and there were four times as many people.
And then the first Monday jukebox they play Tom Waits Roxanne tango, which was bizarre.
Actually, on the whole Monday's music was considerably better than 'mojive average'. There was a stage, between about 8.30 and 9.15, when it was looking distinctly unappetising, but then it just went up several notches and stayed there. |

Just thought I'd bump this old thread now that changes have happened on a Monday night at West Quay.
The freestyle night that replaced the Revolution night completely failed in the end, despite way more free nights than Revolution . I still think there is a vast market for a slightly more advanced midweek night in this area, but not done by Mojive, who, competant as they are at beginner lesson nights, don't have a clue when it comes to anything past improver level. (this is a rant forum! )
Anyway, the Monday night request freestyle bombed.
Now I see Mojive has given up on Modern Jive for Monday nights and now runs a ten week £90 skate course. Interestingly, pretty much in the same format as Mojive lessons nights, beginners and improvers classes.
The question now becomes, with other independants opening new nights left, right and center as Mojive rapidly shrinks, is when are Ceroc going to stake their claim to Southampton ? _________________ My local WCS dance guide: http://www.southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=726 |
