Apologies, sugarfoot, while moving your question from Jive Classes to this, more appropriate forum, I managed to delete it. My bad. However, the question has been discussed at http://southernjive.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 if you want to follow it there.

Hmm...just looked at that thread. All sorts of things going on, so I will try again to strat this thread. Maybe SJ could whip relevant posts onto this thread to keep it on track.

The term ''Pure Jive'' is often used on this forum. It posses the question. What is pure Jive?

Yup seen that, Your definition of Jive. Helpful as a stand alone, but not really a thread dedicated to all users contributing to a growing thread on what is and even what is not pure jive. I still think it could be and enlightening thread to see where everyone is coming from.

Well for me I really don't care what people call things and to be frank I think there's far too much analysis of dance which totally destroys any enjoyment of it. This happened with the TV shows. A few years ago we had total amateur members of the public getting on the telly to dance and it was fantastic. It brought lots of people into dance Including me because it looked great fun and was a pleasure to watch people genuinely enjoying themselves. Now where are they? it's only Celebrities on there But I have to Say John Sargent was BRILLIANT he got my vote as he was what it's about it's about having fun!!!!!

Then it all got analysed to hell and back and people got so far up thier backsides (I'm sure you know which TV judges I'm referring to) and lost the enjoyment entirely. The same thing seems to be happening at some of the venues. I think users of this forum know what I'm saying.

When I've mentioned pure Jive I've meant simply jive and not Tango and WCS and all the flowery slow poesy look at me stuff. Now I've got no dance background and I've no intention of having any either. I just enjoy a dance with a partner and having fun. Dance is all about what you get out of music and becoming part of the music if you like and I like fun upbeat entertaining music. I go to rock n roll gigs (often real 50's Rock n Roll such as The Rockers Reunion at Reading for example) and I like anything from Jean Michelle Jarre to U2 and the Stranglers I also like OMD and Ultravox but I DON'T like Spandau Ballet or Jazz and I run a mile from Hip hop and Rap

So what I'm saying is that to me Jive is about having fun and enjoying letting go and not being restrained and stylised. Actually I try not to let go of my partner if I wanted to do that I'd go to a Disco Wink

I agree that dancing should be fun, especially whilst doing it, but if we are not going to discuss it, why have a forum:?:

I think I understand what some people see as pure Jive, but no social dance is pure; it is always evolving as is the music that it is danced to. It may seem defined in a snapshot of where we are now and most of us struggle with change, which is one of life?s constant battles. Once a dance matures for a specific generation people try to define what is and what isn?t a certain dance. Most forms of social dance are created by creative people who just feel something and move. Others copy and eventually teach others. Rules are made etc. only to be broken by new generations who want to push the boundaries and have no wish to dance like mum and dad.

Some dancers (black Americans) were playing about and developed Black Bottom, Charleston etc. that evolved into Lindy that evolved into Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Rock n Roll, Leroc/Ceroc/MJ etc. Each has evolved with the music and social input of its generations.

The same can be said for Salsa, Tango, WCS etc.

MJ/Ceroc is unique in that it has few constraints. This is why dancers feel free to explore other dances but generally return to Ceroc/MJ where they feel free to experiment with the possibilities of adding/fusing their new dance skills to a wider selection of music. Many others prefer to stay with one dance. It is about individual desires and aspirations. Question

Well for me the point to joining the forum and posting was to find somewhere I enjoyed dancing to the sort of music I like and where I can enjoy myself and have fun and get away from the regimentation and analysis that one or two people seemed to be bringing in to several of the venues I was going to.

The forum allowed me to find some great alternatives to the corporate take overs and find places that people went to have fun and not analyse things to death and whiter on about style and presentation. It's where I can ask other dancers who are customers of these venues of their opinions and suggestions.

I wanted to get away from all the other stuff that put me off dance in the first place after finding a great fun form of dance where it really didn't matter what you did with your feet or posture and simply had fun enjoying music with a partner. I'm glad to say the folk in this forum made some great suggestions and enabled me to enjoy dancing with other like minded folk again. It happened to be often referred to as Jive, Not Swing, not Salsa, not Ballroom not Tango and not Disco

qdos.

Why is it that no matter what topic or thread, you seem to use it to rant about how you have left the Ceroc venues to find great alternatives?

Whilst I appreciate that you feel strongly about this, it is getting more than a bit repetitive and boring. More importantly it constantly adds a negative tone to the thread and stops others from wanting to get involved. I hope you don?t repeat moves like that. Mad

sugarfoot, i have received an email from SJ warning me to watch my posts as apparently there is a risk of me being offensive. So, i will politely ask you to refrain from posting comments in the Jive part of the forum that are designed to antagonise Jivers while pushing your own brand of dancing. i see SJ has made you a moderator of the "Other Dances" section and that is fine as long as you can contain yourself and avoid preaching your gospel in the other parts of the forum. There's nothing wrong with open discussion but you are already aware that most people come here because of Jive rather than anything else. Please respect that.

Hooray! Thank you Happy Camper.

I know there's others who also agree too, as we've talked at the various Jive events we go to about this.

Several people posted elsewhere saying that they did not think there should be posts in a Jive Forum for other dance styles. I was one who said "Why not?" but I'm beginning to regret having said that as it seems Sugarfoot is hell bent on converting us all no matter how much we say thanks but no thanks.[This sentence was deleted as it might cause offence - Admin]

Laughing Good for you HAPPY CAMPER. Sugar Foot is getting far too big for his boots. It's time someone told him where to get off. Keep up the good work.

The title of this thread is 'Define Pure Jive'.
qdos, Happy Camper, and country boy...how about actually attempting to answer the question, rather than make negative comments unrelated to the subject matter? Confused

True you said that Jive wasn't Tango or WCS and it was fun....well that's a start. Laughing
I was of course referring to the negative comments made in the 3 posts above mine.

Thanks DJ Andy…I am glad someone feels same.

In an attempt to get this back on topic, maybe it would be helpful to define the beginner moves that each organisation uses. If there are more similarities than differences, this may define the backbone of MJ. I think it is at the intermediate and advanced stage that it becomes harder to define and more cross pollinating occurs relative to a teacher’s experience. Maybe those who teach MJ and Ceroc can help with this.

Ever hopeful Rolling Eyes
